Quinn Cup - Carterton 34 - Martinborough 17

Carterton bounced back from last week’s defeat with an emphatic victory in the rain at Martinborough, scoring five tries to two. Carterton started with a bang, passes from the Wakefield brothers putting Fiula Tameilau in space down the left wing in the first minute. Despite still having some work to do he ran 40 metres to score, and Sam Morison made it 7-0 with a pinpoint sideline conversion. Martinborough got on the board with a penalty goal after ten minutes, but Carterton soon scored back-to-back tries to lead 19-3.

First Jack Loader barged over after runs from Aseri Waqa and Tameilau, then Shaiane Daniel caught the kickoff, ran 40 metres down the right wing and cleverly waited for support in the form of Waqa who scored in the corner. The home team came back into the match in the second quarter, scoring a converted try after 35 minutes to make the halftime score 19-10.

Carterton struck first in the second half when an attacking tap penalty move brought the same outcome as last week: a Waqa try. I’ve seen this move twice now but and still can’t work out exactly what’s going on, but the opposition can’t either. Martinborough responded with a brilliant long-range team try, then Morison restored Carterton’s advantage to 27-17 with a 30-metre penalty after 58 minutes. Waqa completed the scoring after 65 minutes with a strong contender for try of the season.

Catching a towering up-and-under well in Carterton’s half, he broke clear of several would-be tacklers into opposition territory, chipped over the last defender then outpaced the cover before regathering and diving under the bar. Morison converted for 34-17 and Carterton negotiated the last 15 minutes comfortably. The men in maroon played with greater urgency than last week. Jack Loader made ground with ball in hand all afternoon, Lachie McFadzean ruled the lineouts and produced one audacious run down the left wing and centering kick, and Logan Wakefield – playing at openside for the first time this season – tackled nonstop and gained turnover ball.

The backline was more fluent with Sam Morison playing at 12, where he distributed well and tackled everything in sight. And nothing can stop Aseri Waqa, who dominated the match as he seems to do every week.
