More about me

Tell us about yourself:

Originally from Ireland I’ve been in NZ for about 5 years based in Queenstown. I love all types of bike riding but road racing has been my passion for the last few years. Civil Engineering is my day job and I’m a volunteer firefighter. Besides that all my focus goes on bike riding. I have been steadily progressing in the NZ racing scene for the past few years and also getting more into endurance riding. Enjoy MTB riding as well and snowboard in the winter.

My biography

How did you get into Road Cycling?
Like every kid I loved exploring on a bike with my mates. I got into road biking as my Dad was a keen cyclist and we enjoyed spending some good time riding casually together and always watched the Tour de France. Watching those guys on TV inspired me to get into racing although it wasn’t until I got to NZ that I found the motivation and a good club scene to really get into it. I’ve been hooked since and have progressed through the ranks well over the last few years.

Approach to training and nutrition:
Cycling is a predominantly a physical sport so the saying ‘what you put in is what you get out’ really applies in my opinion. Hard work pays off over time and you can’t shortcut that.  Fortunately, I love riding my bike and training makes me feel great so it’s something I have not struggled with for motivation. Progression and results further fuel the passion.

Nutrition has been a constant learning experience. Over time I have learnt what works and what doesn’t. Generally trying to keep natural with lots of grains, fruit, veg etc where possible. On the bike food needs to be easy and fast to eat. Horleys Replace drink mix and gels are perfect for race day - easy to eat/drink and pack a punch. Convenience is important as well with the travelling of racing and getting nutrition quickly after a ride. Horleys Protein 33 and Horleys Protein Hit are my go to products and I’ll always have them in my bag. Discipline is a must for diet in order to get the balance between weight and performance!
